About PLYNYL

Sound. Culture. Craft.

Sound → our focus on audio gear and speaker workshops

Culture → our roots in sound system heritage and community

Craft → the handmade quality and design ethos behind our products

PLYNYL is a small design studio based in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, founded by Aimee and Kev. We make kit for DJs, music collectors, and vinyl lovers of all ages. Every piece is handmade in our Todmorden workshop using 9mm Scandinavian birch ply – the same materials and methods we use to build Sound Systems.

We don’t mass produce. We don’t cut corners. We build things to last.

We’re also committed to sharing the craft. Through our PLYback scheme, 15% of all profits go straight back into funding creative workshops for young people. If a local authority or venue puts in some match funding, we’ll double it.

The Team

Kev

Kev has been building sound systems for nearly two decades. He’s a founding member of Dub Smugglers Sound System and spent time teaching design and technology before moving full-time into design and fabrication. He now runs Calder Valley Projects, specialising in high-end furniture and fit-outs across the UK. At Plynyl, he brings his deep knowledge of woodworking, speaker design and music culture.

Aimee

Aimee works at the intersection of design, build and community. Her background is in eco-conscious large-format print and interactive installations. She leads on creative projects that span exhibitions, stages and events, with a focus on cultural access and inclusion. She’s won awards for her work in the arts and is actively involved in shaping policy for young people from marginalised backgrounds.

Nicky

For Nicky Listening to music was a passion from a young age, listening to his Dad’s shiny (and not so shiny) black discs that he collected in their thousands to purchasing tapes from Woolworths to play on my multicoloured Walkman it has always had a special place. As he got older, it started to make sense to collect and play out these little discs to friends, and a love for records and, in particular, the dinky little 7” versions, this flowered into DJing and Selecting. From hilltop raves and squat parties to clubs and pubs, he's had a great journey, but never a great record box, that was until Plynyl was born.
